BEST OF MELANGKAP, KOTA BELUD – FRONT RUNNER XPERIENCE #1
The 1st edition of our FRONT RUNNER XPERIENCE SERIES introduces you to the beautiful village of Melangkap located on the foothills of the western side of Mount Kinabalu. Kg. Melangkap is just a stone’s throw from Kinabalu Park, Malaysia’s 1st World Heritage Site.
The Best of Melangkap is an easy and leisure 3 Days 2 Nights overland drive and camping trip which will introduce you to a weekend of fun offroading from Kota Kinabalu to Kiulu and later to Kota Belud Campsite. The total driving distance return is about 250 Km which can be easily done with just one full tank of fuel.
The trip is suitable for a family trip with children. The basic package includes 2 nights camping ground shelter with a sink, electric power, and common facilities for showers and toilets. A total of 4 meals, Lunch and Dinner for Day one and Lunch and an awesome BBQ Dinner for the Day 2 are included. The price is RM380 per person for adults and RM300 per person for children aged 5 to 11 years old. Children under 5 are free of charge.
THE BEST OF MELANGKAP ITINERARY
DAY 1 – NOVEMBER 25TH, 2022
8:00 AM – Participants arrive starting venue (to be announced) for registration and collection of goodie bags. Handing over of radio to every car for convoy communication.
8:30 AM – Convoy procedure, route map, and 4×4 basic driving technical briefing.
9:00 AM – Convoy departs from starting venue and proceeds to Kokok Hill Menggatal. The convoy stops by St Joseph Chapel in Kg. Kokol for a photo session. Proceed straight to the top of Kokol hill and turn to the east downhill toward Kiulu.
9:30 AM – Proceed from Kokol to Kiulu Town through steep downhill terrain and 25 Km off-road gravel road. Will be awarded the beautiful scenery of Mt. Kinabalu if the weather is good.
10:00 AM – KIULU WHITE WATER RAFTING (RM70 PER PERSON) Arrive at Kondis Point Kiulu for Water Rafting. Enjoy white water rafting at Kiulu river which is friendly to all families and children. Water rafting is an optional package. Non-rafters can enjoy the scenery of Kondis Point and walk the suspension bridge across to visit the villages and rice fields.
12:00 PM – Rafters arrived back at Kondis Point for Lunch lunch is served to all participants by Kondis Point.
1:00 PM – Convoy proceeds to Kg Pahu from Kondis to detour into an offroad track from Kiulu-Ranau bi-pass road. Here at Kg Pahu will cross the Mulau River. Learn how to wade your 4wd vehicle through water.
Drive through a 30 Km offroad track through scenic, villages, bridges, forests, and one more river crossing from Kg Pahu to the Nabalu.
2:00 PM – Convoy arrives at Nabalu for a toilet break and a photo session. After 15 mins break, proceed to the Kota Belud bypass to Melangkap campsite.
3:00 PM – Convoy arrives at Melangkap Campsite and will be greeted by the local community with traditional dance and music.
3:30 PM – Allocation of campground shelters and set up camping gear. Free and Easy.
6:00 PM – An introduction to Front Runner vehicle outfitting and camping gear usage by a representative from Front Runner and a showcase of camping and sporting equipment. Make sure you attend this session to entitle to a super-value discount voucher for Front Runner Gears!
7:00 PM – Local Community cooked dishes by Kg Melangkap community. Enjoy traditional vegetables, fruits, and dishes.
9:00 PM – End of Day 1 activities. Free and Easy and Enjoy the Night and beautiful fresh air of Melangkap and view of Mount Kinabalu!
DAY 2 – NOVEMBER 26TH, 2022
7:00 AM – Wake up to a beautiful sunrise view of Mount Kinabalu. Breakfast is not included. Your chance to cook up a nice camp breakfast and use your camping equipment.
9:00 AM – BREAK OUT EXCURSIONS – MOUNTAIN BIKING (15km) / DONGGIRANUK PEAK HIKE (6km).
MOUNTAIN BIKING (RM25.00 PER PERSON)– 2 mountain biking guides will be available. One leader and one sweeper. The trail will ride up from the campsite to Kampung Melangkap Tomis viewpoint, Losok, and pass Polumpung Melangkap to view the river. The ride is around 15 km ascend/descend of about 100m elevation. The bike ride will stop at the fish feeding point at Kampung Melangkap Tomis for a refreshing dip! Relax and chill.
DONGGIRANUK PEAK HIKING (RM55 PER PERSON)– hikers will be provided with shutter services from the campsite to the starting point. The trek is downhill and uphill through a beautiful river and hanging bridge. There is also a fish tagal along the way. The hike is 3 Km from the trailhead to the peak and 6 Km return. At Donggiranuk Peak, you can take awesome pictures of Mount Kinabalu and have a panoramic view of the Kota Belud West Coast all the way to the South China Sea. Your climb will be accompanied by one local guide for every 5 persons. You will get your certificate for the hike when you complete the hike.
12:00 PM – Lunch will be served to all participants by Shoney’s Restaurant from Kota Kinabalu.
2:00 PM – Free and Easy for all participants. Swim in the river, and explore the surrounding villages. Can drive to nearby villages.
7:00 PM – An exquisite BBQ dinner by Shoney’s Restaurant from Kota Kinabalu. Enjoy the camp and share your adventures for the day!
9:00 PM – End of day 1 – FREE AND EASY. CHILL OUT WITH FELLOW CAMPERS.
DAY 3 – NOVEMBER 27TH, 2022
7:00 AM – Wake up to a beautiful sunrise view of Mount Kinabalu. Breakfast is not included. Your chance to cook up a nice camp breakfast and use your camping equipment.
9:00 AM – KIMORUGI WATERFALL HIKE (RM15 PER PERSON) – A very simple 300 m walk to visit the Kimorugi Waterfall at Kampung Malangkap Kapa. Self-drive your vehicles to the trailhead.
11:00 AM – CSR PROJECT – Visit 5 families in need at Melangkap Village to help them (more info soon)
12:00 PM – END OF EVENT – FREE & EASY
FRONT RUNNER XPERIENCE EXPEDITION QUICK DRY TSHIRTS
All participants shall be allocated a free black colour expedition t-shirt for our Front Runner Xperience events. You can however order more as there are 3 colours – black, forest green, and sand colour available at RM50 per piece. You can select your quantity and sizes during registration.
FRONT RUNNER XPERIENCE EXPEDITION CHILDREN DRY TSHIRTS
All child participants shall be allocated a free Junior Xplorer T-shirt. Please select your colour during registration. The available colours are blue and orange. Sizes available are for A (ages 5-6), B (ages 7-8), C (ages 9-10), and D (ages 11-12). Additional T-shirts are available at RM50 per piece.
REGISTRATION TERMS & CONDITIONS
To keep the quality and experience of this expedition, the maximum capacity is limited to only 50 paxs. There are only 10 camping shelters available on a first come first serve basis. We don’t limit the no. of cars per group but may need to share a shelter for larger groups. The base campsite is equipped with showers and toilets. All shelters have their own charging/power point so you can bring your house appliances if you wish. They will also be a wash basin and sink to wash your cooking appliances after a meal and more.
All participants must have 4WD vehicles as there are off-road tracks in the expedition. This expedition is categorised as light and easy and any SUV or 4WD can join. For each car, you are however required to rent a walkie-talkie for convoy communications. The cost of the radio is RM150 for the 3 days. This will ensure that you can practice convoy communications in a convoy to prepare yourself for future expeditions.
What do you need to bring? Basically, this expedition just provides you a guided route map with a leader and support cars, 4 meals included, and a camping site for you to set up your camp. If you do not have a roof tent or ground tent, you can set up your camp beds under the shelters. You are encouraged to bring your cooking and camping gear too as you will be making your own breakfast for day 2 and day 3. Also, it will be nice to cook some food in between meals. We do not provide drinks (only for our set meals) and you are required to be self-sufficient on drinks. It will be wonderful to have your own fridge (talk to us) and you can have cold drinks 24×7 for the next 3 days!
For mountain biking, this event will only provide you with a leader and a sweeper. You are required to bring your own bicycles, drinks, and light snacks. Lunch will be served by 12:00 PM to all participants. You can swim at the fish feeding ending point but swimming with the fishes is not allowed. You can sit in the water with the fish.
